Development and evaluation of an environmental observation mesh network system for supporting operations of aquaponics

Abstract(in English) In recent years, the decrease in the number of farmers has become a serious problem in Japan. An aquaponics which is a sustainable and recycling-based agricultural system is attracting attention because the system is less susceptible to natural disasters. The aquaponics is a new agricultural system that does not require pesticides and utilizes the nitrogen cycle of fish, vegetables, and microorganisms by combining land-based aquaculture and hydroponics. However, the system requires knowledge and experience for managing the environment where fish, vegetables, and microorganisms are growing. Therefore, in this study, we propose a new mesh network system equipped with various measurement functions required for observing the nitrogen cycle. In particular, the proposed system has a function that visualizes the state of aquaponics for administrators by constructing a wide-area sensor network based on Thread which is a wireless communication standard supporting mesh networks and analyzing the collected data. In addition, the proposed system can achieve stable communications by dynamically selecting an appropriate wireless communication channels of data transmission of each type of data. Furthermore, this system can monitor water quality and hardness for judging whether the condition of the environment is appropriate for growth of the fish and vegetables or not. Furthermore, the sugar content is estimated for quantifying the degree of the growth by analyzing the spectroscopic images of vegetables growing in the environment.
