A study on the application of Raptor codes in a relay transmission model for large-capacity data utilizing V2X

Abstract(in English) High-frequency radio waves, such as millimeter waves, which enable high-speed, large-capacity communications between radio stations, have a narrow communication range due to their high propagation loss. To compensate for this limited range, more base stations are required, but in urban areas, it is difficult to secure land for increased number of stations. It is being considered to expand the communication area by transferring huge data with multiple vehicles traveling near a radio station. Those vehicles receive segmented data from the station and relay the data to other radio stations. However, since those vehicles are not guaranteed to reach the other station, some part of the information may be largely lost and should be compensated. When applying a forward error correction code, sometimes the encoding rate is determined at the time of encoding and should be optimized for the channel status. However, predicting actual traffic is thought to be difficult. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method of applying Raptor codes, which can arbitrarily increase the code word size, to transmission coding in the above transmission system using millimeter waves and an assumed communication channel model. Computer simulations show that this scheme works comparable or better performance with fixed-size codes without channel information or feedback.
