A Study on Performance Improvement of Congestion Mitigation and Priority Control by Tilted Allocation of CPU Resources to NFs in 5GC

Abstract(in English) As mobile communication networks become part of the social infrastructure with the advancement of 5G, congestion in the control plane of the 5G mobile core, which causes communication failures, has become a problem. Network slicing is used to prioritize congestion in the control plane, but conventional methods cannot prioritize congestion that occurs before a slice ID is assigned. Also, in recent years, advances in virtualization technology have led to the emergence of software mobile cores, but methods for optimizing the use of limited resources to avoid congestion and guarantee quality in virtualized and cloud-native networks have not yet matured. We have previously proposed control plane slicing as a new slicing method in the control plane and demonstrated the feasibility of (1) reducing congestion in the core and (2) delay priority control in the connection process for specific UEs [1]. We propose to improve the performance of (1) and (2) by implementing control plane slicing and considering "CPU gradient allocation," which optimally allocates a certain amount of computing resources to software network functions. In this paper, we implement and evaluate the proposed method in a Local 5G environment using a software mobile core. The evaluation results show that the proposed method is effective in reducing congestion in the control plane and improving the performance of priority control. We also discuss comparison with current network slicing methods.
