Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In recent years, the underwater environment of Lake Biwa has been experiencing prolonged hypoxic conditions during the summer season, which has led to a challenging habitat for aquatic creatures dwelling at the lake bed. There are two primary reasons for the conditions. The first reason is an uneven topography of the lake bed. The second reason is that stratification occurs in the lake because the surface of the lake gets warm and confines oxygen to the upper layer without spreading throughout. Furthermore, organisms residing in the under-oxygenated lower layer continually consume the dissolved oxygen, which results in forming areas with a lower concentration of dissolved oxygen. To monitor such aquatic conditions, devices equipped with measurement functions of dissolved oxygen such as smart buoys have been proposed. However, the observation range is limited in the vicinity of the position where the buoy is placed, hence it is unable to observe the conditions of the lake comprehensively. Therefore, this study aims to develop a sensing system to comprehensively monitor the underwater conditions using small under- water drones equipped with various measuring devices in real-time. The proposed system observes the underwater environment using an underwater drone equipped with a small computer and various sensors. After that, the obtained data is analyzed to visualize the three-dimensional structure of the lake bed and the distribution of dissolved oxygen at the lake bed as heat maps.
