Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In recent years, there has been growing concern about the impact of microplastics on the marine ecosystem. Microplastics are plastic particles that are 5mm or smaller and are created when plastic waste in the ocean is broken down by environmental factors such as UV light and waves. Microplastics have been identified as a major cause of ocean pollution because they absorb harmful substances such as dioxins and can be ingested by marine organisms and subsequently humans. Existing technologies for collecting microplastics include manually operated ships equipped with fine-mesh nets. However, the high costs (i.e., time, money) associated with these methods have proven to be a significant problem. Several methods have been proposed to detect the presence of microplastics, including Fourier transform, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and hyperspectral imaging, but the optimal method has not to be established yet. Additionally, all methods require expensive sensors. To solve these challenges, this study aims to develop a system that expands the capabilities of underwater drones to collect microplastics and perform image analysis targeting the near-infrared region to detect the presence of microplastics in the collected objects. Furthermore, this system includes a function to visualize the distribution of microplastics. To achieve real-time visualization at sea, the use of low-power wide-area (LPWA) is being considered for information sharing between underwater drones.
