Recognition of handshape phonemes in Japanese Sign Language using a sign corpus

Abstract(in English) The authors created a database of Japanese Sign Language syllables using the "Japanese-JSL Dictionary" as a corpus. Using this database, the authors examined the occurrence of the O handshape and found that, with some exceptions, the O handshape does not appear in the type 3 non-dominant hand. We then extended the survey to all JSL syllable types (type 0 to type 3) and examined the occurrence of O handshapes, and found that many O handshapes do not constitute a phonemic handshape /O/ on their own, indicating that there is a strong possibility that no phonemic handshape /O/ exists in JSL.
