A study of fast factorized backprojection on multiple GPUs for large-sized SAR imaging

Abstract(in English) This paper presents a study of distributed parallel FFBP (fast factorized backprojection) on multiple GPUs for large-sized SAR (synthetic aperture radar) imaging, where signals and images do not fit in the GPU memory size. The FFBP is based on recursive subaperture divisions, and produces the low-resolution image for each subaperture. The produced subaperture images are recursively resampled and coherently summed to produce a high-resolution image. To parallelize such a imaging algorithm, a breadth-first recursive division is performed to simultaneously process all subapertures located at the same division-depth. At each division-depth, every subaperture signal and/or image is subdivided by CPU, and distributed from CPU to all GPUs. Each GPU processes the imaging or image-fusion on the GPU memory to produce new image. The prodoced images are gathered in CPU memory. Our parallel FFBP is configured by repeating the above procedure for each division-depth. In the case of FFBP imaging with $2^10$ subapertures for the 32768 pulses x2 channels, we found that 8 GPUs take 5.8 seconds, which is 24.9 times faster than 32-threaded CPUs, to produce 32768x32768 pixels.
