Abstract(in English) | We propose a method for constructing a visual field-cortical projection function using the Kohonen's self-organizing algo-rithm (SOM). First, we present the problems of conventional model functions for cortical projection. To solve these problems, we discuss the method of artificial neurons’ position on the SOM space and the probability density function that the input signal to the SOM subject to. We quantitatively evaluate the obtained SOM in terms of cortical magnification factor and po-lar-angle dependence of the magnification. We confirmed that the mapping function is consistent with physiological data when the density of receptive fields of retinal ganglion cells was adopted as the input to the SOM. The flexibility in the placement of artificial neurons of the SOM allows us to obtain visual field-cortical projection functions in the primary visual cortex V1 of squirrel monkeys as well as in humans. We also obtained the mapping function for the V2 area. The computa-tional conclusion is that the V1 cortex may be performing vector-quantization of visual field with 1-norm error minimization criterion. |
