A Study of Average Bit Error Analysis of Underwater Optical Camera Communication Using RGB-LED Array

Abstract(in English) In recent years, underwater visible light communication (UVLC) is being considered to realize large-capacity underwater wireless communication for underwater and seafloor observations. Two types of UVLC have been widely studied: PD-based UVLC, which uses a laser diode (LD) and a light emitting diode (LED) as the transmitter (Tx) and a photodiode (PD) as the receiver (Rx), and underwater optical camera communication (UOCC), which uses a camera as the Rx. The UOCC is short range and slower than PD-based UVLC, but the advantage of UOCC is that they do not require strict optical-axis alignment due to the high spatial resolution of the camera and are highly resistant to ambient light, thus establishing highly reliable communications. In addition, since the propagation characteristics of visible light change in response to underwater turbidity, it is useful to apply multiple colors to realize a more reliable UOCC, so seawater turbidity's effect should be evaluated in UOCC. In this study, we construct a theoretical analysis model of the entire framework of UOCC using an RGB-LED array as a Tx and a full-color camera as an Rx, considering the optical characteristics of the Tx and Rx, their arrangement, seawater turbidity, and analyze and evaluate the effects of these on communication performance theoretically. Assuming that the LED position estimation on the captured image is ideal, this study derives the bit-error rate (BER) when using the on-off keying (OOK) method by thresholding the received digital value per LED captured image.
