Analyzing Time-series Characteristics of IoT Traffic Using Two-stage Clustering

Abstract(in English) In recent years, Internet of things (IoT) has been getting more popular in the world, and many kinds of IoT devices are now being used in various situations. Since IoT devices are basically connected to the network, the management of IoT devices must be required like PCs or smart phones from the viewpoint of security and privacy. However, it is hard to update the devices or their software once installed and even to figure out how IoT devices work in real time. As a solution for this problem, the methods to analyze traffic data of IoT devices have been proposed. Although the conventional methods can identify and classify IoT devices, they do not show the characteristics of the time variability of IoT traffic. This paper proposes a method to analyze time-series characteristics of IoT traffic using two-stage clustering. The proposed method makes it possible to explicitly grasp how IoT devices communicate and to extract more effective features for identifying IoT devices.
