Abstract(in English) | The optokinetic response (OKR) and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) are reflexive eye movements that are responsible for stabilizing our vision during our head motion. In goldfish, it has been shown that the OKR eye velocity becomes predictive after a prolonged visual stimulation alternating its direction periodically. This is known as the predictive OKR, which was demonstrated to require the cerebellum and the velocity storage mechanism (VSM) residing bilaterally in the brainstem. The OKR and the VOR are known to share these neural circuitries, and co-change their gains defined as OKR eye velocity / visual stimulus velocity and VOR eye velocity / head velocity after either of the gains is adaptively modified by cerebellar dependent learning paradigms. Thus, it was foreseen that the predictive ability in OKR acquired by visual training may transfer to the VOR. Furthermore, the VOR itself may be predictive after prolonged periodic vestibular stimulation. In this study, we evaluated these possibilities in goldfish that has been a popular model animal in vestibular and oculomotor neuroscience. |
