Relay Decision Algorithm for Broadcast Transmission in 5G mmWave Sidelink Communication

Abstract(in English) This report proposes a distributed relay decision algorithm with/for fifth generation (5G) millimeter wave (mmWave) sidelink broadcast communications. MmWave communications generally suffer from a large degradation on received power caused by a line-of-sight (LoS) blockage effect, which not only largely deteriorates the performance in user equipments (UEs), but also yields even blind spots for UEs. The proposed algorithm serves as a foundation to solve this issue by relaying packets to UEs potentially subject to blockage effects. The proposed algorithm is based on the 5G device-to-device communication termed sidelink and is compatible with the 5G physical layer specifications. The core idea behind the proposed algorithm is in the estimation part of potential receive failure due to blockage effects in proximity UEs based on the demodulation reference signal-based channel estimation. This allows each UE to estimate whether blind spots are potentially yielded in proximity; thereby performing a relay effectively. Numerical evaluation demonstrates an improvement in the number of UEs with a success reception relative to without the relaying, highlighting the effectiveness of relaying.
