Proposal and Empirical Evaluation of Relay Communication Methods for LPWA Real-time Sensing

Abstract(in English) Real-time sensing of the natural environment often requires power-saving and long-distance communication, and LPWA communication methods are becoming popular, however, relay nodes in systems with relays need to be constantly powered. This research proposes two methods to reduce power consumption by enabling relay nodes to sleep. Sleep of relay nodes requires time synchronization between nodes and control of communication time, which is achieved by the relay node querying the end node for data in the first proposed method and by broadcasting time information and giving time slots to each end node in the second method. A comparative evaluation of the methods is carried out using simulations, and the implementation of the methods by LoRa Private and the improvement in power efficiency is shown through a demonstration in Izunuma, Miyagi Prefecture.
