Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Among all social cues, gaze cues play an important role during interactions that happen before an informal communication. We designed and implemented three gaze cue visualization methods in a 3D virtual space to investigate whether the visualization of gaze cues facilitates initiation of informal communication. 96 participants used one of four gaze cues (non-visualized gaze cue, gaze cue visualized with an arrow, flowing bubbles, or a miniature avatar) with one-way and joint gaze types. The results showed that compared to the non-visualized gaze cue, the three visualized gaze cues successfully facilitated the initiation of informal communication in both gaze types. Among the three visualization methods, bubbles were most effective for the one-way type, and the receiver of the gaze cue reacted more to the sender verbally and nonverbally. This study could be applied to multi-user VR applications such as virtual conferencing and virtual exhibitions.
