Free-space optical communication system with wide-steering beam for terrestrial access networks

Abstract(in English) We propose an free-space optical communication (FSO) system for terrestrial access networks. The proposed system has a mechanism to adjust the optical beam to a wide angle, forming a network with free-space optical communication and redundant communication paths to enhance reliability. We show the loss characteristics of the optical beam propagating in the atmosphere near the ground. Then we analyze the data transfer throughput by the communication method and the reliability improvement by networking. The analyzed results designates that the FSO network had worked without any signal power shortages for error-free services in the rain condition for the last one year in Yokohama city when it has the link length of 580m.
