Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Inspection Method of Building Surface Condition under Challenged Communication Environment

Abstract(in English) In general, building owners have to investigate conditions such as aging deterioration; however, new methods such as remote investigation and investigation using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been started because of the heavy installation burden of temporary scaffolding. It is necessary to detect abnormalities such as cracks, delamination and floating in the outer wall investigation using images. However, previous studies have mainly focused on detecting anomalies from images and moving images, and methods to investigate the entire structure in a short time or to express the results of the investigation as a three-dimensional model are not sufficient yet. Therefore, in this paper, we design a method to scan the entire external structure of a building using a UAV, detect anomalies from recorded videos and map them on a three-dimensional model, taking into account the challenged communication environment. In addition, the anomaly detection method and mapping on a three-dimensional model are evaluated using real data, and the UAV search routing method is evaluated by numerical experiments using a three-dimensional model of a hypothetical building.
