Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In teaching motor skills, instructors often provide instructions related to learners’ subjective body perception in order to induce desirable body movement. In the present study, we experimentally investigated the effects of different instructions in practice swing of Kendo (Japanese fencing). One of the important points in sword swing is to relax the right arm/hand. However, it has little effect to directly tell the learners to reduce the muscle tension of the right arm and thus, various indirect instructions are used instead. In the present study, we asked four beginner participants to repeat practice swing under direct and indirect instructions, and measured the sword and body movements before and after the practice using a motion capture system. Although considerable inter-subject difference existed, some movement features suggested that the swing of the beginners became closer to those of the experts under the indirect instruction compared to the direct instruction. We discuss the present results in relation to the reason why it is difficult to relax the right arm/hand in sword swing.
