Constant Number Packet Aggregation with Delay Constraints for TCP in IoT

Abstract(in English) Packet aggregation at gateway (GW) routers in the Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most promising ways to avoid overload of servers due to large amounts of sensing data from many IoT devices during a disaster. UDP is commonly used for the transport layer protocol in IoT environment because of resource constraints for devices, and packet aggregation has been also studied for UDP in IoT. TCP in IoT has been attractive because it can provide end-to-end TCP semantics for cloud servers, and has been discussed in RFC 9006. In this paper, we focus on packet aggregation methods for TCP in IoT. First, we evaluate Constant Number Aggregation (CNA) method where a GW aggregates the fixed number of packets and show that CNA provokes TCP timeout. To resolve this technical problem, we propose Time-Constrained Constant Number Aggregation (TCNA) method that integrates CNA with time constrained aggregation where a GW pushes out an aggregated packet even without arrival of the fixed number packet when timer expires. Our performance evaluation results show that TCNA has no TCP timeout events with good packet aggregation performance.
