Design of dielectric loaded TM0m0 mode cylindrical cavity resonator for the evaluation of a lossy dielectric material

Abstract(in English) In recent years, microwave technology has been employed in medical fields, and evaluation of the complex permittivity of the liquid biological tissue or its phantom is required. The TM0m0 mode cylindrical cavity resonator method, which is known as the accurate evaluation method for rod-shaped dielectric materials, has also been attracted attention as an evaluation method for liquids. However, when lossy dielectric material such as the biological tissue is loaded into the resonator, the resonance is difficult to measure because the Q factor decreases due to excessive concentration of electric field on the sample. In this paper, we propose a new resonator structure in which a low-loss dielectric ring is inserted near the cavity sidewall to suppress the electric field concentration. Then, the improvement of the Q factor was confirmed from the rigorous analysis of the resonance characteristics. The design of the resonator for the measurement is also shown.
