A Design of High-speed Packet Caching in ICN Routers using a Programmable Switch and Computers

Abstract(in English) This paper presents a high-speed design of packet caching for Information-Centric Networking (ICN) routers built on a hybrid hardware platform of a programmable switch and computers, where DRAM devices of the computers are used to cache data packets. Through a comprehensive bottleneck analysis of the hardware platform, we clarify that data transferred between the switch and the computers limits the forwarding speed by wasting the bandwidth of the switch ports’ connecting the computers. To resolve the limitation, the paper proposes two algorithms: cache admission, which reduces the amount of data transferred from the switch to the computer, and lazy response, which reduces the amount of data transferred in the opposite direction. We experimentally show that a prototype router implementation with two algorithms realizes 916 Gbps forwarding speed.
