An Extension of User-PC Computing System for NS-3 Network Simulations

Abstract(in English) Currently, we are developing the user-PC computing (UPC) system as a low-cost and high-performance distributed computing platform based on the master-worker model. Since the Docker image is necessary for running any job in the UPC system, we have implemented the Docker image generation (DIG) tool. NS-3 is a popular network simulator that has been used to develop and evaluate various network protocols. Since the running time is often long, the speedup with the UPC system is essential to investigate a lot of choices of logics and parameters to develop a new protocol. Then, the Docker image should be automatically generated to reduce the load when the NS-3 program is modified. In this paper, we present an extension of the UPC system for efficient executions of the NS-3 network simulator using the DIG tool. This tool will be used at a worker in addition to the server, since the user sometimes needs to modify the source codes or parameters of the running NS-3 at a worker. Then, when modified at a worker, they will be shared with a master. Through experiments, we confirmed the validity of the implementation.
