Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recent studies have focused on self-similarity (fractal property) in images and processing fluency of images as possible explanatory factors for the beauty of an image. However, previous studies used images with texture information and could not extract only geometric self-similarity. Therefore, it has remained how self-similarity and processing fluency are related to beauty judgments. In this study, we created pure geometric images without texture and examined the relationship between self-similarity, processing fluency, and beauty using response time and masking tasks. The results showed that processing fluency decreased with increasing self-similarity, while the beauty rating was highest for images with intermediate self-similarity. This study suggests that it may be hard to explain beauty judgments of images with self-similarity solely in terms of processing fluency and that there is a need to reexamine the relationship between beauty and processing fluency.
