Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Whereas our own voices are familiar to us in everyday life, we feel uncomfortable when listening to recordings of the voices. It is unclear under what conditions this discomfort arises. In this study, we hypothesized that the discomfort occurs strongly and abruptly when the voice resembles one's own voice during a speech to a certain degree, like the uncanny valley phenomenon, and quantified the discomfort for the voice by manipulating acoustic features using voice morphing. We found that discomfort with one's own voice does not occur abruptly, and furthermore, that some participants were less uncomfortable with their own voice than with the voices of others. These results suggest that discomfort with one's own voice is not merely defined by acoustic features, but is determined by a complex of factors.
