Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Peripersonal space (PPS) is the space immediately around the body and represented as a part of the body. PPS is plastic and can be altered by visuotactile experiences or body movements; however, little is known about how the altered PPS is restored after the experience. Here, we investigated this issue using a reachable distance judgment task. A virtual hand was presented to participants farther than the original hand position in a virtual reality environment. The embodiment of the virtual hand was induced by synchronizing its movements with real hand movements. After the induction, the virtual hand disappeared and the PPS (the maximum reachable distance that participants perceive) was measured over time. The results showed that the PPS range gradually decreased over time. This suggests that the body representation is not immediately restored to its original state after the removal of visual information, but rather gradually updated.
