Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Peripersonal space (PPS) is where the body strongly interacts with the external environment. Previous research has shown that hand-centered PPS is larger in older adults than in younger ones. Each body part, such as the hand, head, or chest, has its own independently represented PPS. However, little is known about how aging modulates chest-centered PPS. The present study investigated this topic. The PPS was defined as the region in which a visual stimulus presented immediately around the body facilitates a tactile stimulus. During the experiment, participants were seated on chairs and outfitted with tactile devices on their chests. Visual stimuli were presented on a large display in front of them. Participants’ task was to respond as quickly as possible to the tactile stimulus delivered on their chest while viewing the visual stimulus at various distances on display. The results showed that a visual stimulus farther from the chest facilitated tactile detection in older adults than younger ones. This suggests that the chest-centered PPS range is larger in older adults than in younger adults.
