Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Previous studies on mirror illusions have reported that body perception was induced by the integration of body processing information (vision, motor system, and proprioception), and was constantly updated. In addition, an aging study has shown that the body position perception caused by a mirror illusion decreases over time in younger adults, while it remains consistent in older ones. However, the underlying mechanism that gives rise to this age-related specificity remains unclear. In this study, based on a study that a sense of agency can modulate in aging, we aimed to investigate the perception of the activeness of finger movements, which induce the mirror illusion, on the temporal characteristics of the body position perception. We compared the differences in the temporal characteristics for young adults under two conditions: an active condition, in which the participants were instructed to actively tap their fingers, and a passive condition, in which the participants’ fingers were passively tapped upon by an experimenter. Results showed that the magnitude of the illusion decreased over time in the active condition, whereas it remained consistent in the passive condition. These results suggest that the perception of the activeness of finger movements in inducing the illusion may affect the temporal characteristics of body position perception.
