Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) When human listeners perceive auditory information in noisy environments, auditory spatial attention plays a key role in identifying and extracting the sound of interest from multiple sources. Despite its significance in daily life, auditory spatial attention in the distance domain remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined the extent to which distance from the target sound affects auditory spatial attention by utilizing the reaction time and false alarm rate of the target sound as indexes. Listeners were presented with sound stimuli from multiple sources distributed at varying distances. Listener’s attention was manipulated by controlling the probability of the sound stimuli being presented. However, there were no differences that would support the hypothesis of this experiment in terms of reaction time. In contrast, in the false alarm rate, as the distance between the target sound and the listening distance increased, the false alarm rate also increased. This result suggests that this false alarm rate pattern reflects the extent to which competing stimuli can be ignored (i.e., the spatial extent of auditory spatial attention).
