Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) HAPS (High-Altitude Platform Stations), which provide mobile communication services by installing base station equipment on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying in the stratosphere at an altitude of 20 km, are being considered worldwide. The HAPS system is expected to realize a mobile network that is not affected by natural disasters, a mobile communication system that covers a super wide area, and a communication platform for IoT (Internet of Things) terminals such as drones and various sensors. The HAPS communication system consists of a service link between HAPS and user terminals and a feeder link for communication with gateway stations and other HAPS on the ground. HAPS forms a service area in the exact location by circling in the sky. Therefore, antenna design and beam control considering HAPS attitude changes are essential for each radio link. In addition, for HAPS to fly in the stratosphere, it is necessary to develop radio equipment that considers the stratospheric environment. This paper describes the environmental conditions unique to HAPS, which are different from those of ground base stations. In addition, the issues to be considered in developing a HAPS radio relay system that considers these environmental conditions and an overview of related research and development are presented.
