Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) When observers are exposed to a uniform visual motion projected on large area of their visual fields, they perceive illusory motion of their own body in the opposite direction to the visual motion. This perceptual phenomenon is called visually induced self-motion perception, or vection. In this study, four stroke apparent motion (4SAM) which contained unidirectional luminally defined motion energy but without a continuous change of position was employed as a possible vection inducer. There were three different motion types, namely translating (in horizontal direction), expanding and rotating motions. In each motion type, 4SAM and real motion were prepared. Psychophysical experiments which employed 15 undergraduate observers revealed that 4SAM inducer can significantly induce vection in each motion type, although its strengths were considerably weaker than in the real motion condition. In addition, in the conditions of rotation and expansion, the differences of vection strength between the 4SAM and the real motion conditions became moderate.
