Abstract(in English) | In this paper, asymmetric Y-branched polymer optical waveguides are investigated theoretically and experimentally as a mode multiplexer which is an essential component for mode division multiplexing. The novelty is in the fact that graded-index(GI) cores are formed by means of the imprint method. GI core Y-branch waveguides are confirmed theoretically to be superior to the conventional SI core waveguide in terms of mode splitting ratio, insertion loss, and device size. We also fabricate Y-branch waveguides that exhibit low insertion loss for TE01 and TE11 mode propagation in a system with SMF excitation and FMF reception, which is designed for implementation. A GI square core Y-branch waveguide (waveguide length: 4 cm) exhibits the lowest insertion loss of 5.01 dB for TE01 mode propagation and 5.99 dB for TE11 mode propagation at 1550-nm wavelength. |
