A Study on Shadowing Characteristics of Ka-band Satellite Communications Due to Difference of Urban Structures

Abstract(in English) Mobile satellite communications are affected by shadowing objects such as buildings in urban areas. If possible, it is desirable to estimate the shadowing area in advance and reflect the result when operating mobile earth stations. In order to understand the shadowing characteristics of Ka-band satellite communications due to difference of urban structures, we measured of Ka band shadowing area measurement of BSAT-4 in Chiba, Mito, and Kashima City, by dividing the city structure into city, suburban, and rural areas. The simulation of shadowing area of Chiba City was carried out using GIS, and it was compared with the measurement result. In addition, the shadowing characteristic of city, suburb and rural area was divided into the effect of artifact (mainly by the building) and the effect of others (mainly vegetation such as street tree), and the quantification of each communication shadowing characteristic was tried. This paper reports the results.
