Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Nursing in the End-of-life care of cancer patients causes a great deal of stress to the nurses, which is feared to lead to turnover and burnout. Newly graduated nurses are particularly vulnerable to difficulties because they are not only concerned about End-of-life care, but also have various other anxieties. In response to this issue, Asano et al. developed a subjective scale to measure newly graduated nurses’ difficulties with End-of-life care for cancer patients (NDEC scale) for use in support and education of newly graduated nurses. In this study, in order to explore an objective measure of sense of difficulty that can be used together with this scale, we propose heart rate variability measures, a stress indicator, and will clarify whether there is a relationship between the scores on the NDEC scale and heart rate variability measures. The study subjects were newly graduated nurses. In the experiment, the subjects were asked to answer two questionnaires after 10 minutes of heart rate measurement in a resting sitting position in a quiet room. Heart rate variability measures can be extracted by frequency analysis of the heart rate data. By statistically analyzing this and the data from the questionnaires, we investigated the relationship between the newly graduated nurses' sense of difficulty in providing End-of-life care and their current state of stress.
