Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Bats use echolocation to perceive their surroundings by emitting ultrasounds from their nostrils or mouths and listening to their echoes. The ability to "see by sound" that bats have acquired to survive in the dark not only far surpasses existing engineering technology, but their behavior also reveals unique tactics regarding active sensing. This presentation will introduce the use of ultrasound by echolocating bats as observed through various flight experiments conducted in the laboratory with captive bats. Bats vary the frequency and duration of emitted ultrasounds and the intervals between emissions, depending on the surrounding conditions and the information they wish to obtain. However, conventional microphone-based measurements cannot accurately measure ultrasounds emitted by bats in flight. The authors investigate the ultrasounds emitted by bats in flight and echoes from their surroundings using a technique in which a small telemetry microphone is mounted on the back of the bat. In this presentation, I will introduce one of the unique behaviors of bats, "compensation behavior," as well as recent research on the tactics of bats when flying simultaneously with conspecifics, such as jamming avoidance behavior.
