Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Divergent and convergent thinking in creativity are known to be influenced by body movement. In this study, we examined how the observation and imagination of body movements would affect creative thinking. Participants observed or imagined arm movements of different sizes (bigger/smaller) and came up with imaginary names for rice varieties. Comparison of the number of divergent and convergent responses showed no effect of movements size in the imaginary condition. On the other hand, in the observation condition, the number of divergent thinking increased when a smaller arm movement was observed, and divergent thinking was suppressed when a bigger arm movement was observed. This result is different from those observed in a previous study where bigger movements promoted divergent thinking. Further investigations are needed to consider other factors such as cognitive resources. |
