Experimental verification of compact airborne ultrasound emitter using annular piezoelectric ceramics

Abstract(in English) We have studied scanning elastic wave source technique using Airborne Ultrasound Phased Array (AUPA) as one of non-contact non-destructive testing methods for solid materials. Side lobe and grating lobe (GL) are emitted from AUPA in addition to the main lobe. Artifacts caused by GL occur in testing results, when the AUPA is applied to non-destructive testing. Therefore, it is necessary to suppress the occurrence of GL to improve artifacts. GL occurs when the distance between the ultrasound emitters that build up the AUPA is longer than the sound wavelength. In this report, we built a small airborne ultrasound emitter by combining ring-shaped piezoelectric ceramics and a stainless-steel film. And We also verified its characteristics. As a result, we were able to irradiate sound waves with high sound pressure at the same frequency as the conventional emitter.
