Development of a robotic VR system that allows users to shake hands with CG characters

Abstract(in English) Normally, it is not possible to physically touch a CG character in a virtual space. Therefore, an interface has been proposed in which a robot hand is attached to the extension of the character's hand on the display to enable a handshake. However, in such an interface, the character is a two-dimensional image and there is a dimensional inconsistency between the character and the three-dimensional robot hand. This inconsistency may diminish the sensation of direct contact with the character. To solve this problem, we developed an interface in which a character is displayed three-dimensionally on a head-mounted display (HMD) and the CG hand is superimposed on the real robot hand. We will verify the effectiveness of this interface in resolving dimensional inconsistencies.
