On Botnet Disinfection by Rebooting by Area

Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a method of rebooting on a per-area basis rather than on a per-device basis to get rid of IoT botnets. Rebooting devices is the basic method for removing bots, and it is desirable to reboot every time a bot is discovered. However, since bots are repeatedly generated here and there in the network and further propagate themselves, rebooting on a per-device basis has limitations in dealing with bots. In the proposed method, the network is divided into several areas, and rebooting is controlled for each area. Since rebooting causes a risk of redoing processes and data loss, the timing of rebooting should be determined in consideration of its impact and effect. We proposed several area segmentation methods and reboot control methods, and conducted simulation evaluations of their combinations. As a result, the proposed method gave better results than the conventional bot countermeasure of rebooting individually.
