Abstract(in English) | A cost-effective capacity enhancement for photonic networks is proposed, which adopts multi-band transmission only on links to be heavily congested. The transmission on additional frequency bands is regarded as virtually defined links, named multi-band virtual direct links. These virtual direct links use wavelength converters at the ingress and egress nodes to allow optical paths in the conventional band to traverse the links without violating the compatibility to existing networks. Numerical simulations on dynamic path operations in three real topologies, Spanish Telef?nica, Pan-European COST266, and British Telecom network, showed that the proposed scheme enhances capacity by 45.1/13.5/15.6%, respectively. The numbers of paths going through the virtual direct links are small, and hence, the use of multi-band transmission devices is minimized. |
