Spatio-temporal filtering circuit simulating the characteristics of the visual nervous system

Abstract(in English) In the present study, we designed a spatio-temporal filter circuit that simulates the characteristics of the visual nervous system by combining a multi-scale spatial Gabor filter and a temporal band-pass filter. To reduce the computational load of the spatial filter, we employed the following techniques: separating one two-dimentional filter into two one-dimentional filters by using the separability of Gaussian and Gabor functions, and multi-scale filter kernels that differ in width but not in shape. We implemented the filter circuit into a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), and developed an image sensor system that consists of a FPGA and a CMOS image sensor. The system provided spatio-temporal filtered images with 160 $times$ 120 pixels at about 110 frames / second.
