Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | This study elucidates the relationship between whether /j/ and /w/ are classified as consonants in a language and how frequently /CjV/ and /CwV/ (C = consonants, V = vowels) in the language are written using katakanas for /jV/ (ya-gy?) and /wV/ (wa-gy?) respectively when borrowed into Japanese. We revealed that there is no general relationship between the classification of /j/ in donor languages and the frequency of notations with ya-gy? corresponding to /CjV/, while the sequences /CwV/ in the languages in which /w/ is classified as a consonant are more likely to be written using wa-gy? than in the languages in which /w/ is not classified as a consonant. |
