Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | The essence of linguistic communication lies in “exchange of meanings” and “meaningful exchanges of messages.” In learning and aquation of native and non-native languages, importance of meaningful interactions is increasingly recognized in recent years. Here, “interactions” are not limited to those between humans and humans but include a wider range between cognitive agents and their semiotic environments such as linguistic and acoustic landscapes. The “meanings” that are thus conveyed and exchanged are not limited to those linguistically or culturally established norms or conventions but may include ephemeral ideas, concepts, requests or injunctions that emerge when cognitive agents interact with their environments. In this presentation, we will focus on how emergence of meanings and emergent meanings affect interactions between cognitive agents and their environments and how this view may shed new light on language learning and language acquisition. We also recognize that determining what the intended meanings might be is a real-time process, with severely limited time constraints and cognitive resource allocations. For instance, if you are driving a car and come across a posted speed sign or other traffic signs, very often you don’t have that much time to consider how to interpret and respond to the sign. A subtle grammatical difference may require an instant and immediate important decision-making process, such as when a sings says “Exit Right Lane” as opposed to “Exit Right Lanes.” |
