Effect of congestion on time synchronization of IEEE 802.1AS

Abstract(in English) This paper evaluates the effect of network congestion on time synchronization accuracy in an Ethernet-based in-vehicle network adopting IEEE 802.1AS, a standard for time synchronization. IEEE 802.1AS is one of the IEEE 802.1TSN (Time-Sensitive Networking) standards, and since messages for time synchronization are transmitted over Ethernet, the transmission quality deteriorates due to network congestion. This study evaluates the accuracy of time synchronization in IEEE 802.1AS by congesting a network with two switches with load traffic and changing the degree of congestion. The experimental results show that time synchronization accuracy deteriorates significantly when the transmission speed of load traffic exceeds 90¥% of the line speed.
