A Proposal of Night Vision Algorithm by a Modified Gamma Transform and S-shape Functions-based Multiscale Image Enhancement

Abstract(in English) Images taken under low-light conditions such as at night or in a dark rooms are dark and their visibilities are very visibility. Recently, many low-light image enhancement algorithms (night vision algorithms) have been proposed. However, the conventional methods have some problems such as causing over enhancement in bright regions and/or high computational cost. In this report, we propose a new low-light image enhancement method to cope with these problems. In the proposed method, a modified gamma transform is applied to the brightness of the input image. It reduce the distributional bias of dark pixels. Then, the contrast and edges of the image are enhanced and sharpen by applying multiscale image enhancement employing S-shape functions. In the experiments, the proposed method is compared with the state-of-the-art methods through qualitative and quantitative evaluations. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
