Abstract(in English) In this talk, we present the first demonstration of free-space optical (FSO) communication using a photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL), which was reported in an ECOC post-deadline session. Since a PCSEL achieves much larger-area single-mode coherent lasing compared to other types of lasers, it maintains an excellent beam profile over a very wide area, while enabling watt-class high-power operation and much smaller beam divergence angle. Therefore, it becomes possible to replace conventional bulky transmitter components such as optical amplifiers and lens systems for beam collimation with a single PCSEL, leading to drastic simplification of FSO transmitters. In the demonstration, we successfully transmitted an optical signal directly modulated using a PCSEL over a free space of 1.1 m without using any lenses at the transmitter.
