Abstract(in English) Recent rapid growth of optical fiber communication has led to a significant demand for health monitoring technology of optical fiber communication networks. One of the promising techniques that can be used to detect defects and/or breakage points along a fiber is optical correlation-domain reflectometry (OCDR), which can measure the reflected power distribution along an optical fiber. The OCDR system has been simplified from several aspects; for instance, an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) for optical heterodyne detection was removed from the setup. However, the observation of Rayleigh scattering signal has not been reported in the AOM-free OCDR. In this work, we observe the Rayleigh scattering signal using the AOM-free OCDR for the first time, by intentionally deteriorating the spatial resolution. We also measure optical propagation loss using a 10-km-long sensing fiber.
