FPGA Implementation of Learned Image Compression

Abstract(in English) Learned image compression (LIC) has reached a superior coding gain than traditional hand-crafted standards such as JPEG and JPEG2K. Most LIC frameworks are floating-point arithmetic, and they are accelerated by GPU. However, the rounding error of floating-point computation will cause the decoding failure if encoding and decoding are performed on different platforms. Therefore, LIC with a fixed-point arithmetic is highly required. This paper gives an FPGA implementation of a LIC with 8-bit fixed-point quantization. Compared with the state-of-the-art FPGA-based LIC implementation, our system can reach 5x faster coding speed.
