Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In 1966, the first online security system outfitted in Japan was developed and commercialized by SECOM. It used sensors to detect intrusion and fires and was met with astonishment since security was assumed to be in the realm of human jobs at the time. In the half-century since its first introduction, advancements in sensing technologies have made it possible to replace human eyes and ears in most aspects of daily life. The dizzying progress in analyzing images and data collected by the sensors have seen these technologies used not only for security and crime prevention, but also in diverse applications such as autonomous vehicles and advanced control of logistics, as well as person authentication and activity observations. However, for these technologies to be accepted as a critical part of social safety, issues such as privacy must be addressed in conjunction with technical issues such as sensing accuracy. Drawn from our service experiences, this talk will introduce sensing technologies necessary for social safety. In addition, key issues arising from expansion to large-scale social services will be discussed.
