Effect of virtual objects' luminance on Depth-fused 3D with optical see-through head-mounted displays

Abstract(in English) We examined Depth-Fused 3D (DFD) between real objects and virtual objects accomplished with mixed reality by utilizing Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Displays (OST-HMDs). DFD is a technique of presenting 3-D images by superimposing images displayed with front and rear screens. In mixed reality with OST-HMDs, virtual objects can be superimposed on real objects because the real objects behind the virtual objects are visible. In the experiment, there were conditions of virtual objects’ luminance, and the perceived depths of DFD images were measured. The results obtained from the experiment indicated that the perceived depths of DFD images were controllable by virtual objects’ luminance. We demonstrated the feasibility of DFD with real objects and virtual objects presented using OST-HMDs in mixed reality.
