Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Characteristic variations caused by nonuniformities in the fabrication process are inevitable in carrier-depletion Mach?Zehnder (MZ) silicon optical modulators. However, it is unknown how inter-arm imbalance in phase shifters that have a voltage dependence impacts device performance with respect to the chirp parameter in a push-pull manner. First, a generalized form of the large-signal modulation efficiency is used to characterize the inter-arm imbalance. We also propose an evaluation methodology that enables us to measure the absorption losses in each arm separately. A generalized form of the chirp parameter is formulated and quantified by using the proposed ME and evaluation methodology of the absorption loss, which suitably distinguishes its sources between the nonlinearities in modulation efficiency and absorption loss and their inter-arm imbalance. The impact of inter-arm imbalance on the chirp parameter is evaluated on a 300-mm SOI wafer.
