A study on contention window size and carrier sense level for inter vehicle communication systems

Abstract(in English) ARIB STD T-109 has been established as the ITS wireless communication standard in Japan, and CSMA/CA is used as the access control method. In CSMA/CA, a uniform random number in the range from 0 to CWS is used to determine the backoff time, and ARIB STD T-109 defines the contention window size CWS to be 63. The carrier sense level, which is a threshold for determining the channel state, is set at -53 dBm. Although these functions allow CSMA/CA to avoid and detect collisions in transmitted frames, they do not completely avoid the occurrence of frame collisions due to remaining backoff time matching and hidden terminal problems. In this paper, we evaluate communication performances by computer simulations with the parameters of the contention window size to avoid the match of residual backoff time and the carrier sense level to avoid the hidden terminal problem.
